a huge challenge

Many years ago, David Waddilove, the founder of the Freedom Trail set the extreme  triathlon dream in motion. This year, I hoped to emulate his journey.  On the 12 June I ran 90km from the Durban City Hall to The Pietermaritzburg City Hall.  It took me 11:30:00. The very next day (13 June) I started the 2200km Freedom Challenge Race Across South Africa (RASA) from  Pietermaritzburg to Paarl. I was joined in this event by 2 women. Omphile Motaung and Rebecca Sands.  Rebecca and I were absolutely delighted to be able to ride and mentor Omphile on her first ever RASA. We finished 21 days later. What a journey and advenure! Omphile became the first black woman to ride the full Freedom Challenge RASA. She was so strong and resilient.  After only one days rest I then started   the four-day Berg River Canoe Marathon (240km from Paarl to Veldrif).

I always knew that paddling The Berg Canoe Marathon was going to be the toughest challenge as I am new to paddling. Since I did not have the adequate river proficiency (the Berg is technical) I was only allowed to paddle in a K1 with a chaperone. David Waddilove kindly offered to escort me on my maiden berg River outing. This was all very last minute, so I am very grateful to David for I offering his services. We managed the first day, although I did fall into the freezing water 5 times! The second day was very technical with tree blocks. Once again my progress was slow with many freezing swims in the Berg. It soon became apparent that  we were not going to finish the 70km in daylight hours and we abandoned the race. I was disappointed but learnt so much about myself and paddling. I will keep on trying. Thank you to the Berg organizers and David Waddilove for their gracious assistance. I will be back!
