Race To willowmore

Cradock to Willowmore, Eastern Cape

A non-stop, self-navigated mountain bike race from Cradock to Willowmore. 530km and 7000m ascent.

With Omphile Motaung

Part 2:A ride with Omphile

Three days later I started the Race-to-Willowmore, the non-stop mountain bike race from Cradock to Willowmore. I was absolutely delighted to be joined by Omphile Motaung, a 25-year-old woman from Bloemfontein, for her first ever Freedom Challenge event. Together we rode 530km, across some very technical mountain biking terrain, 7000m ascent, self-navigating the route using a compass and maps. (No GPS is allowed). Omphile became the first black woman  to ride a Freedom Challenge event. She was brave, tenacious and bold. On one of the days, we had to cross a full flowing river, 11 times. It was only afterwards that Omphile admitted that she didn’t know how to swim. I have put Omphile’s name down to join me in my June challenge to take on the Freedom Challenge Race Across South Africa (RASA), a 2200km race from Pietermaritzburg to Paarl. I will be using my May challenge (The Hour Endurance Challenge) to raise funds for her entry.
