The Jo'burg to Blouberg 1000 Mile Challenge involves riding the Massive Adventures Jo’burg to Blouberg 1000 Mile Cycle Route “self-supported”. The route starts at Three Rivers on the southern outskirts of that great South African City of Gold, Johannesburg, and ends approximately 1,000 miles (1,600km) later at Blouberg Beach, Cape Town, in view of the world-renowned Table Mountain. I rode this race with Omphile Motaung.

What an adventure! We braved mud, flooded rivers, heat and an exploding front tyre. We even managed to get lost, despite using a GPS! A small error that added an extra day of riding to our journey.

The last few days were tough.. headwind, heat, sand and corrugations. Ou Berg Pass and the Tankwa is an interesting place... beautiful, remote but not to be taken lightly. We finished on Wednesday evening. Two women, two Mom's, and two friends. Thanks for all the support. South Africa, despite all her problems is spectacular. Her people are even better. We rode unsupported and were received with joy, admiration, respect and love. We felt safe and never threatened. I wish that every woman in RSA could feel this free. Women hold up half of the sky, yet we are often made to feel irresponsible for embracing our freedom and for 'looking for trouble'. Perhaps we were lucky. I like to think that we were fortunate and blessed.

This is a spectacular ride. There is no entry fee. The route is set and GPS is allowed. You choose where and when you want to sleep. There is no cut off. You can race or take your sweet time savoring the journey You can ride the route in either direction. This 1000 miler should be on your bucket list.
